I am interested in exploring the intersection of science and art. As an artist who studied biochemistry in college, I am inspired by the intricate workings of chemical reactions and the electric signals that catalyze and sustain life wherein the laws of Cosmos govern all things from the microscopic to the telescopic.
According to modern physics, gravity was the cosmic ladle that stirred up hydrogen atoms to create trillions of stars and released waves of energy in the process. I find my calligraphic strokes to be an immediate way to communicate the fluidity of this energy, which manifests in all things on this planet, both the animate and the inanimate. I apply multiple layers of paint and ink using unconventional tools. The layers are created by a process of layering and erasing and then re-layering of strokes. Some of them are erased completely while others are allowed to show through, enabling them to interact with those from other layers of paint. The strokes are spontaneous and uninhibited. Like a scientist in a laboratory, I set the parameters of the aesthetic experimentation and let it unfold on its own.
My artistic goals aim to combine my understanding of science with intuition and imagination in order to create images which illuminate the mystery and poetry of our existence, located in this remote corner of Cosmos. The next experiment will further explore calligraphic strokes, drawing and painting in a conscious dialogue with surface, edge and color by varying the parameters of scale and materiality.
