Xavier Drong is a painter based in Paris, France who portrays the multidimensional character of abstract forms that suggest the dynamic, angular and biomorphic. Within the limits posed by flat two-dimensional surfaces, Drong expands on the architectonic suggesting mechanical movement that also exposes the material saturation of paint as the medium traces and settles into the painted surface. Narrative, moreover, is entirely absent as the titles of each piece are different combinations of letters, highlighting the necessity of form over and above the literal.

HBKR (2011) utilizes a combination of dark ochre colors that twist, wind and overlap into a large-scale, 5-foot by 6-foot, circular form that recedes and stretches throughout the canvas. The artist’s wide brush strokes, moreover, dissolve the viewer into the gradations of color and shade. CRLDG (2010) uses a similar array of hues but consists of more angles and sharp edges. In both cases, paint seeps from different parts of each composition, deconstructing the illusion while reviving it through the observation process.

Two ink-jet renderings titled GRLT (2011) and WZB (2011) move Drong’s painted forms to the realm of tangible, metallic sculpture that has not yet been realized. However, the juxtaposition of the smooth, shiny surfaces render reflections and depth suggesting that these forms are natural to the urban environment.

Xavier Drong’s first solo show in Paris took place in 2003 at Galerie Premier Regard. In 2008 Le BOL of Orléans hosted a solo show of new work by Xavier Drong titled Machinorganisme. Three more solo shows soon followed with Fiction ? (2009) at Erba in Grenoble-Valence, 90 jours (2010) at L’H du Siege of Valenciennes and Diffraction at L’Arboretum located in Argenton-sur-Creuse. Drong’s work has also appeared in numerous group shows throughout France. In January 2012 the artist’s work will appear in La Fureur de l’Eternuement, a group show that will appear in the ESADHAR Gallery located in Le Havre, France.
