Jason Stopa
Jason Stopa is a painter who lives and works in Brooklyn. He was born in 1983 and grew up in New Jersey. Stopa works with glazes of paint that he then manipulates until a particular residue emerges on the surface of the canvas. By creating the impression of visual ambiguity the artist adds a sense of mystery to the picture plane, refusing to satisfy curiosity.
Stopa’s growing interest in memory appears in the blur and smear of colors, confusing narrative into a subjective experience. Caterpillar (2010) portrays a small, yellow form upon a dark blue void. A silhouette of this shape appears once again, further below, similar to a water reflection.
However the drip and smudge of paint throughout leaves this work suspended within the space of obscurity, revealing that specific realistic content is secondary to the viewing experience. Suspended and The Collection (Doomsday Seed Vault) both from 2010, reflect an equal sense of the placeless that is uplifted with light colors. Stopa’s new work from 2012 makes the leap into the genre of abstraction. In these new pieces, paint drips and colors mingle creating a rich visual texture. In September 2012, the artist curated AGGRO CRAG, a group show at BOSI Contemporary that featured some of these new pieces.
Jason Stopa is now represented by Monica King Contemporary located in New York City.
