Gisella Sorrentino is a photographer based in New York City, originally from Rome, Italy.  Sorrentino utilizes the process of double-exposure and combines performance with static backgrounds that merge subjects with textures such as asphalt, cobble stones, sand and ocean water.  In each piece the artist evokes nostalgia and ambiance, playing upon the desire of place rather than presenting its actuality.

After relocating to New York City, Sorrentino began exploring the aesthetic layers of the photograph as a metaphor for the diversified lifestyles that populate this urban city center. Fusion and separateness appear throughout a series titled Bodies in Space that was started in 2009.  Arturo-StreetIn (2011), for instance, captures the figure of a man at an array of angles, unwinding over the dry and wet grounded surfaces of concrete and crumbling tar whereas Licia-Embody (2011) features a figure merging into the covering of a tree. Camouflage continues further in Sabine-InSand (2011-2012) a series of fourteen photographs that portray ocean, beach and sky with the trace of someone in the foreground. The artist’s most recent series Collin was completed in 2013 and reveals Sorrentino’s effective fusion of performance with pictorial texture.

Since 2006 Gisella Sorrentino has exhibited her photographs in exhibitions that took place in Europe and along the East Coast.  In 2010 the artist’s work was projected at Gelato! Photo Slide Show at the s.t. foto galleria libreria in Rome, Italy.  During that year Sorrentino’s work appeared in 12.25.2009 – A Photography Project, a group show curated by Barbara Gentile and Monika Sosnowski for the Storefront Artist Project in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. La Mama La Galleria, located in the Bowery, included the artist’s photographs in The Family Show that took place in December 2010.  In 2011 Sorrentino’s work appeared in NordArt 2011 an international group exhibition that took place at Kunstwerk Carlshütte located in Budelsdorf, Germany.  From May to June 2012, Gisella Sorrentino presented her series Bodies in Space at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne in Rome, Italy. In July 2012 NOoSphere Arts, located in the Bowery, featured a one-day photo installation of the artist’s work titled InSand.  Throughout 2013 the artist participated in two group shows, at The Phatory in Boom and Bloom during the month of May and in September at The Posthuman Conference that took place at the Universita di Roma Tre.  Sorrentino received two solo shows of her work in 2014 at the Wix Lounge in January and then at The Secret Theater in Long Island City, during the month of April. Her photographs also appeared in a group show titled IDA – Gran Gala di danza per il sociale at the Teatro Aligheri, located in Ravenna, Italy as well as ArtItaly & ArtWorld at Domagk Ateliers located in Munich, Germany.
