Fabien Mérelle is an artist who lives and works in Tours, France. Mérelle’s concentration on figurative drawing utilizes scale and detail to capture fantastic and other worldly scenes that appear textured and real. As metaphors for his own life experiences, the artist utilizes drawing to express a shared empathy of experiences that cannot easily be phrased with words.

Mérelle’s drawings play most strongly on uncertainty. Igny (2012) portrays a small village from a distance with a looming rock-face hanging from the sky above, whereas Avant (2012) shows him as a top of the tree that he has grown into. Responding to the experiences of fatherhood, the artist portrays himself as a tall, wood plant that struggles to move forward.

Since completing his fellowship at the Casa de Velàzquez in 2008, Fabien Mérelle has had six solo shows in Paris. His first titled New Work: Fabien Mérelle took place in 2008 at Galerie Premier Regard. Merelle’s most recent exhibition took place at Galerie Praz Delavallade in the spring of 2012. The artist’s work has also been seen in an array of group shows around the world and appeared in New York’s Armory Show in 2011 with the Guy Bartschi Gallery from Geneva, Switzerland and Galerie Michel Soskine from Madrid, Spain. Fabien Mérelle’s drawings are also featured in the collection of Daniel and Florence Guerlain.
