Eliza Stamps
Eliza Stamps is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Stamps creates winding, anthropomorphic drawings that begin with one mark before continuing without any preconceived ideas. Unbroken structure becomes the centerpiece of her work, one that appears to float within the frame of the paper’s surface.
Made with ink on paper, Knot Running (2013) features a pair of lines that run continuously together, suggesting the photographic still form of a running athlete. A complementary piece Knot of Late (2013) reflects a similar structure with the winding Y-form appearing more static whereas Knot Guilty (2012) is a suspended collection of winding paths. We Keep Running Into Each Other (2009) captures a density of traces that build up into a series of floral structures. The artist has extended the concept of the drawn line into paper creases, emphasized with shades of graphite.
In 2006 Eliza Stamps received her MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Since then her work has appeared in numerous group shows such as Can’t Hear the Revolution that took place in 2011 at Kunsthalle Galapagos and Qualities of Life that occurred at the Philadelphia Art Alliance in 2012. In 2007 the artist received Honorable Mention from the Smithtown Arts Council, located in Smithtown New York, and she was a semifinalist in the 2009 Sprout Emerging Artists Program. In 2013 the Edgewater Gallery located in Middlebury, Vermont will host These Paths We Walk Together, a solo exhibition of the artist’s most recent work. Stamps will also have a solo show at The 1961 in Cambodia titled Klaa Dtao which will incorporate the demonstration of her handmade fortune cards. The artist is currently preparing for a solo exhibition that will appear in 2015 at the William Feick Arts Center located in Poulney, Vermont. A selection of the artist’s drawings are included in the Pierogi Flat Files.
