Cora Jane Glasser is an artist who lives in Manhattan and works in Long Island City. Glasser explores and abstracts the urban built environment often in its various stages of construction and demolition.  Layered and built-up textures of color across Homasote-on-wood surfaces reflect the experience of architectural form. Most recently, she has been documenting the collision of sunlight when it strikes against and crosses through structural surfaces, The artist’s use of bright hues using oil paint on paper not only flattens out the effects of curved surfaces but also carries the observer’s gaze on a series of abstract but linear pathways.

Glasser works in series, often grouping several pieces together that create a visual iambic pentameter.  Frieze (2013) is a modular construction of paintings and paper forms consisting of up to 14 panels panels that interconnect and extend up to 16-feet across and can be installed in various configurations.  The black backgrounds seen in this piece serve as a springboard for the white map-like lines that intersect with other spaces, colored with either deep blue or bright orange hues.  Barrier Reef (2013) reflects a similar color composition and measures 24”-square while suggesting an array of otherworldly, underwater forms.  A sense of high volume compressed into compact space appears in Six Stories (2013) that also suggests the classification of architectural components such as base, façade and entablature.  Whitney Under Construction (2013) expands further on the language of architecture and elicits the interaction of light, along with its reflection of ocean, as seen from the building’s exterior surfaces. Part of the recent series exploring light, Sunrise in the West (3)” (2014) combines oil on paper and extracts the play of sunlight within architectural forms, depicting the light itself as structure.

Cora Jane Glasser has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.  In 2008 Glasser was a finalist in the MTA’s Arts for Transit, for the East 180th Street Station. In 2012 the Blackney Hayes Architects Gallery, located in Philadelphia, featured her paintings in Foundations. Glasser’s work has also appeared in Archi | Texture that first showed at Broadway Suites during 2012 before appearing again at the FXFOWLE Gallery in 2013, and the Living Room Gallery in 2014 – all in New York City.  Gallery 61, within the New York Institute of Technology, recently featured Glasser in Trajectories. The artist’s paintings are included in the collection of the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center and in the corporate collections of Pfizer, Acumen Capital, Vericon Construction and XØ Projects.
