Chris Mendoza develops a contemporary abstract discourse through mixed media as well as a collage of graffitied postal stickers, which he has collected or produced himself. His dynamic surface exposes a three-dimensional space through two-dimensional pictorial planes, as it exploits tension between the foreground and background. Textual composition stretches across the drawing as letter interweaves with shape and vice versa. Whether on paper or in installation, Mendoza creates visually-ornate imagery that blends the decorative with design.

Although Mendoza’s work is abstract in nature, it depicts clearly-divided strokes such as ink juxtaposed against thick applications of acutely-shaped colored or monochromatic graphitized stickers. Mendoza cuts each individually piece individually. His collage portrays brightly-colored figures that dive into or jump from crashing waves of black and white contorted iconography. His intricate ink drawings create an imaginary world.

Mendoza, born in Managua, Nicaragua, lives and works in New York City and shows internationally. His precision has been inherited from his father, an architect, and his adoption of street style derives from an acclimation to the Bronx at a young age. Presently, he incorporates his home with his homeland with amalgamation of folklore, nature, New York architecture and more.

Mendoza has exhibited internationally; his work has been shown at WWA Gallery, Culver City; Beams, Tokyo; SoHo House, New York; Basel, Switzerland; Fuse Gallery, New York; Museo de Arte, San Juan; White Box Gallery, New York; Transport Gallery, Los Angeles; and Dyezu-Exp Gallery, Tokyo; Joshua Liner, New York.
