Annemarie Waugh is a painter from Birmingham, England who lives and works in Long Island, New York. Waugh weaves perception into form by way of an interdisciplinary approach. Inspired by the intersection of art and science as well as the subtle structures of visual communication, the artist utilizes motifs found within the fringe of mainstream culture. Her representations of abstract and figurative forms elicit the close relationship that exists between line and color as well as illusion and fantasy, investigating research-based details and the disenchantment of fictitious desire.

Waugh’s most recent piece titled Head in the Clouds (2018) is a small clay sculpture, featured above, and is accompanied by a poem.  Her previous work, seen below, such as Spring Notes (2013)  portrays a spray of colorful blossoms and suggests a floral mountain landscape even though this piece echoes aspects of the Brainbow neuroimaging technique.

Donate a tree, London plane (2013) is one of a suite of ten drawings that portray various botanical motifs based upon the flora and fauna found near the new Parrish Art Museum in Long Island. This particular series evolved as a compliment to the museum’s recent outreach for assistance in growing a landscape around its new building.

Le Chaperone Rouge (2012) is a monotype from a series titled Little Red. Focusing on the fade and change of iconic folklore, Waugh portrays a smudged almost unidentifiable, meek figure. Pain and Pleasure (2011) is a significantly large-scale piece made of acrylic and pencil on canvas that shows a young girl trying on large shoes bordered by a cartoon caricature on the right. The artist’s stream of consciousness is accentuated through the random marks of color that layer the composition.

In 1990 Annemarie Waugh received her BA from Central St. Martins in London and exhibited frequently throughout London in the early 1990s with galleries such as Covent Garden, the Floral Street Galleries and Freud’s.  In 1991 Waugh’s work appeared in the Christies and the Royal College’s group exhibition “Painters of 91.” In 2005 the artist was included in an exhibition at The Commons, located at New York University. Four years later Annemarie Waugh participated in an exhibition at the Smithtown Arts Council.

In 2010 her art was featured at The Art League of Long Island. In 2013 her work appeared in a show hosted by The East End Arts Council of Long Island. Since 1997 she has received commissions from companies such as Radical Media, Showtime, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, VH1 and The World Financial Center.  From April 12th to June 28th, 2013 Waugh received her first solo show Spring Notes hosted by the Setauket Neighborhood House in Long Island.
