Anne Lacouture
Anne Lacouture is an artist who lives and works in Paris, France. Lacouture deconstructs the drawing process into silhouettes, profiles and fragments that play with the viewer’s longing for figurative narrative. The artist’s work ranges from black, figurative lines on paper to built-up papered surfaces that sometimes become large room installations, submerging viewers into the experience of depiction.
Les marionettes (2009) consists of nine sheets of drawing paper hanging side by side. On the far left, Lacouture begins the series with the representation of a hairline in the center of a blank surface. The hair grows in volume as the series progresses to the right until an explosion of black covers the last three drawings as well as the gallery wall above. The artist continues to combine the unexpected, fluid line of ink in another series titled L’arrivée (2011), which presents seven views of anonymous individuals when seen from the back while walking. However Lacouture builds up part of the figure, like the coats and hair, whereas the legs and handbags are implied by the pour pattern of ink. She expands the field of drawing into an all-encompassing installation titled Can I touch… (2011) where crumpled sheets of paper are layered and attached to the walls and columns of the gallery’s exhibition space. The artist creates her work on a trajectory that unwittingly builds suspense by disturbing the process of repetition.
Anne Lecouture’s first solo exhibition in Paris têtes à têtes took place at Galerie Premier Regard from January 20th to February 5th, 2011. During that year, Galerie Linz included her drawings in Art Paris and Art on Paper Bruxelles. In January 2012 Lacouture’s drawings appeared in a group show titled Seuil at Galerie Linz and also in Art Paris during the Spring. Anne Lacouture is currently preparing for her solo show that will open at Galerie Linz on May 15th, 2013 in Paris, France.
