Cyril Lecomte-Languérand

Cyril Lecomte-Languérand  is a new media artist who lives and works in Paris, France. Lecomte-Languérand creates interactive installations that bridge the virtual with real time.  As a result the artist reflects the gradual unfolding of time within a digital framework while transgressing the boundaries of illusion, revisiting the relationship between gallery, artist, art object and observer.

Sorry, Wrong Number (2011) is a two-minute video loop that features six different QR codes, encouraging viewers to engage their mobile devices with this work of art.  Once connected, the sound of a telephone ring emits throughout the installation space.  These sounds do not lead to a specific residence or business.  Instead these digital codes merely trigger Lecomte-Languérand’s collection of sounds that were culled from various movies.  Tiles of Symphonia (2010) recreates the mysterious setting of the Japanese video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night without any action figures, placing the viewer in the position of actor.

Cyril Lecomte-Languérand studied new media at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Dijon, France.  In 2009 he received a Harlem Studio Fellowship in New York City and created You Are Under Arrest Soul LeWitt is currently a work in progress.  Curiosity confronts monotony in Lecomte-Languérand ‘s rendition of Sol LeWitt’s four-color square wall drawings.  In Soul LeWitt 1.1 the artist explores the maximum of a set of chosen color combinations and sets them within a virtual gallery. The computer functions as the prosthetic eye for the viewer.  While moving slowly through the gallery space, each LeWitt changes, givingobservers the chance to see how this highly systematized aesthetic evolves.
