Clément Bagot

Clément Bagot is an artist who lives and works in Paris, France. Bagot creates densely layered drawings that appear highly detailed, and maze-like, before expanding his flat representations into tangible objects that piece together larger installations. Comprising a multitude of thin layers, built up into material density, the artist’s references to architecture appear consistently throughout. However the traditional grid expands rapidly into a series of unexpected networks, as forms grow and build precariously from one into another.

Ovum (2009-2010) is a capsule suspended from the ceiling that contains a miniature model of what would soon become larger built structures. Clément Bagot reaches into real space in Mise en Place (2010), consisting primarily of yellow, black and white boards turned on their sides to express the view of a narrow line. This particular installation covers the gallery’s floor and walls, making the exhibition space physically unusable for observers but utilizing three-dimensional space as a larger framework that leads one’s view toward other vertically assembled constructions and further into the notion of linear depth.

In 2011 Bagot moved his aesthetic into a Gothic architectural setting, with an installation titled Traversée d’Espace.  This piece featured white, gray and black verticals and horizontals that were juxtaposed to the pointed domes, ribbed vaults and buttresses of an order in architecture that was used primarily between the 12th and 16thcenturies. By deconstructing the viewing experience into a rhythmic, systematized event, Clément Bagot uses sculpture and drawing to critique the process of perception.

Since 1997 Clément Bagot has exhibited in an array of group shows that have appeared in Paris, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.  In 2007 the artist had a solo show with Galerie Premier Regard and another titled Binôme at the Musée de l’Hospice St Roch in Issoudun, France.  Bagot also participated in a residency at Sculpture Space in Utica, New York during 2008.  In 2009, the artist’s work appeared in a group exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo that was organized by Gerard Garoust on behalf of Association La Source.  In 2010 Galerie Eric Dupont hosted a solo show for the artist titled Entrée en matière. Bagot’s 2011 solo exhibition titled Traversée d’Espace, was curated by Philippe Piguet and took place at the Chapelle de la Visitation in Thonon-les-Bains, located in the French Alps. The artist won the prize at Drawing Now 2012 and is currently represented by Galerie Eric Dupont.
