Sky Kim

Sky Kim is a painter from Seoul, Korea who lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. Kim utilizes watercolor and weaves the act of meditation into intricately planned work, that is first made in 5-foot square fragments on scrolls that ultimately extend from 15- to 30-feet in length. The result is an array of serendipitous illusions that fascinate through the combination of color and scale.
All of Kim’s paintings are left untitled in order not to confer meaning on a series of subjective experiences. Untitled 1 (2010) captures an unending matrix of circles that oscillate in blue, green and purple whereas Untitled 5 (2011) appears similar but only comprises an entirely different effect and is more sporadic. The artist magnifies the knot and interlacing fibers in Untitled 4 (2011) wherein black watercolor appears in a complex grayscale that appears as if it is immediately tactile.
In September 2011 Sky Kim exhibited some of her most recent scrolls in a show titled Reiterate the Repeat that appeared at the Sheppard Gallery in Reno, Nevada. The Dalet Galley of Philadelphia hosted a solo show of Kim’s scrolls titled Sea of SAMSARA in April 2011. Throughout the past year the artist has also exhibited some of her work in group shows such as Residue that appeared at the Mills Gallery in Boston, the DUMBO Arts Festival, and PIN-IT-UP at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City.
