Brian Whiteley

Brian Whiteley concentrates around a chosen concept, while he works several media with the goal of creating installations. Generally, he includes photography, found object assemblage, video work, and performance art in each installation. An installation may be viewed individually as well as collectively; Whiteley finds dynamic, interactive ways of displaying his works. Creation of an individual part takes anywhere from two days to two weeks. A completed installation is not ready for view until nearly three months after Whitely begins. Although he works quickly to produce many objects, he then edits his overall installation and individual pieces to render a successful installation
Each of Whiteley’s installations provides the viewer with a multi-sensory experience, as many different types of media collide together in a depiction of cohesion of his artistic vision—a shatter glimpse into Whiteley’s world. Using installation as a self-expletory investigation, Whiteley stacks metaphoric layers of his perception of reality. He meditates on tension, social pressures, inner struggles, feelings of being trapped, struggling to break free and finding a new voice or meaning to his madness.
Whiteley puts his image in the place of models or subjects juxtaposing artist and artwork. His installations include Whiteley’s body as a living sculpture (placing his head in a hole in the wall and remaining still on the floor), which he shows among an amalgamation all things old, disused, discarded and lived in.
Whiteley’s studio is located in Brooklyn currently. Whiteley’s work has been featured multiple times in the New York Times, Time Out NY, SPIN with Rayban, and Starving Artist Guide. His work has been shown Gowanus Ballroom, Bond Street Gallery, 220 Gallery and at the Climate Summit Week of Artists in New York. The Affordable Art Fair, The Urban Arts Festival, and the Brooklyn Artillery have included his work.
Whiteley’s most recent project is a self-exploration of kink and perversion. He personally engaged in each fetish acting out these “subversive” sexual acts: Foot Fetish, Baby Fetish, Domination, Torture, Self Punishment, Spanking, Choking, Balloon.
