Peter Sebastian Brock

Peter Sebastian Brock works with mixed media juxtaposing artistic material and found objects. Recently, he focuses on cheap construction timber and found objects such as rocks and bricks. He makes his own paint from a polyurethane binder and pigments. Finding great intrigue and possibility in utilitarian objects, he documents the process of subtly transforming or subverting their significance.
Conceptually, Brock is driven by material curiosity and spatial ambiguity, attempting to craft objects that embrace paradox, whimsy and confrontation. His work derives from juxtaposition and the intrinsic expressive-power of materials. As a window frame to the sky, his works open to ambiguity. He views visual paradox as a tool, with which he can pry the viewer free from the limitations of intellectual categories and offer a space for an expansive visual experience.
Brock works and lives in Brooklyn. He was born in Washington DC and grew up in Bay Area (Berkeley, CA). He received a 2009 BA in Economic and Political Development from Skidmore College, where he was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. Later, he had studied under Bill Jensen and Margrit Lewczuk to complete a New York Studio Painting Certificate Program from 2009 to 2011, which he left before completion.
